Form & Material
cedar, poplar
"I sense Light as the giver of all presences, and material as spent Light. What is made by light casts a shadow, and the shadow belongs to Light" - Louis Kahn
This project began with my curiosity to bend wood. To study the material, I turned to the masters of bending wood - and refinished an old Eames DCW chair. I then began milling and bending wood myself through several processes. What resulted were composed laminated arcs and freeform squiggles. Each bend is modular - it is a component of a larger piece.
The ceramic vessels in the gallery show are also an extension of form, material, and light. Notice the texture of the large pot - hand built through coiling and pinching - reflects my hands used to manipulate the material. The light finds its way into little crevices, dramatically spotlighting areas and moments of texture.
